"There are black rooks or crows around here and they roost for the night in a neighboring tract of woodland. Some days ago I was coming home from a walk with a couple of fellows and about dusk we were near the woods where the rooks were flying in enormous numbers. In the distance there was an aeroplane going in the same direction and I remarked how exactly like one of the birds it looked. It circled about toward us and coming down much lower flew just over the tops of the trees which were full of the rooks just settling down for the night. You should have seen the commotion. They came out of those woods by the millions until the sky was black with them. As horses accustom themselves to automobiles so I suppose the birds will come to regard aeroplanes as harmless intruders of their domains. They ought in not too long for planes are always flying about when it isn’t too windy."
