13. Mobile Hospital Unit 8
In September 1918, Pennsylvania Hospital Unit 10 was asked to form a Mobile Unit by the American Expeditionary Forces. This Unit, Mobile Unit 8, was comprised of 7 officers, Outerbridge among them, as well as 20 nurses and 40 men from the Pennsylvania unit. Additional French personnel rounded the unit out to around 100 people. The unit, once detrained and set up, consisted of 200 beds intended to function as the evacuation hospital (see block 9 for a detailed description of the patient intake from Outerbridge's letters) handling only the most seriously wounded and non-transportable cases. These photographs portray the Mobile Unit in both its transportable and deployed states.
