E. Arrived Le Havre, France, September 5, 1917
Arriving in Le Havre, France on September, 5 1917, Outerbridge wrote home describing his experiences with English Army Transport.
"We have been in the hands of the English Army Transport, who have a great system that moves like clockwork . . . No tickets are required on trains or boats when traveling under orders. On trains the officers are in 1st class and the men are in 3rd. Officers not traveling on orders are able to get half priced 1st class tickets. I was certified an “Officer in His Majesty Service, on Leave” when traveling to see Dulce . . . Women are at work at the train stations as bag handlers, ticket takers, conductors, etc. The lack of men is noticeable, at the barbershop there is only one chair working when there would normally be 3 or 4."
