George Outerbridge received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1907, and went on to intern and teach at the University's hospital. In 1913, he was elected a Fellow of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia. When the United States entered the war in April 1917, Outerbridge, and many of his colleagues, entered active service as part of Pennsylvania Hospital Unit No. 10 which was called into service in August of that year.
