Encountering the British Army
The Pennsylvania Hospital Unit landed in Liverpool on May 27 at 6 in the evening, "Liverpool is a busy seaport," he recounted, "full of all races of men and types of uniforms." After encountering British soldiers for the first time he commented on his preference for the British uniform: "English uniforms very attractive and comfortable; more sensible than ours; with low collars and big patch pockets." Norris was continually impressed with the British far beyond the uniforms. He noted the dedication, sacrifice and bravery throughout his diary. He described the people he encountered as cheerful, despite the hardship and anxiety they endured. "At the time our unit landed in England, a vague atmosphere of tension prevailed. It was estimated that the food supply—would only last six weeks! The U-boat sinkings were on the increase; yet the British people managed to smile, laugh and joke."
