The Weapons of War

Gelbkreuz Gasschutz

Dr. Norris poignantly described Base Camp 10's encounter with a new poison gas, which they labeled "mustard" because of its pungent smell. He wrote, "Mustard was a highly efficient war measure. Some of the victims died promptly, but the majority, after we learned to remove their clothes and wash them, recovered. But—and this is the main point—they required many weeks and months of medical care." Norris became well-versed to understanding and treating poison gas exposure and gave several lectures on the subject to the medical community upon his return from Europe.

Dr. Norris removed this sign from a German mustard gas shelter.

Campagne de 1914-1916

Here, a German Ammunition dump was camouflaged in a farmer's field. As Norris described, dangers abounded in the countryside, despite its seemingly tranquil appearance.
