The Kellogg Brothers

John Harvey and Will Keith Kellogg were both prominent figures at the Battle Creek Sanitarium. John Harvey acted as doctor and superintendent and Will Keith as head bookkeeper. Will also helped in crafting recipes for the Sanitarium’s often rigorous diet plans. Diets were vegetarian, as per Adventist principles, focusing on low-fat, low-protein diets with an emphasis on whole grains, fiber-rich foods, and nuts. Condiments, spices, alcohol, chocolate, coffee and tea were eliminated, as they were seen as harmful not just for the body but for the soul.
