Surgery course ticket signed by Dr, Thomas Dent Mütter for the semester 1846-1847 at Jefferson Medical College. That year he was the first to use ether anesthesia in Philadelphia.

Thomas Dent Mütter, Philadelphia, Pa., surgeon and teacher, was born in Richmond, Va., on 9 Mar. 1811. He received an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1831, then studied medicine in Europe. In 1841, during the reorganization of Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Mütter became professor of surgery there and held that post until ill health forced him to resign it in 1856. He died in Charleston, S.C., on 19 Mar. 1859. His teaching collection of pathological and anatomical specimens was bequeathed to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and forms the basis of its Mütter Museum.
