Photograph album from the Grape Creek Smallpox Camp and Hospital showing patients, staff, & vaccinations in 1898/1899
Two album pages, board with 3-hole punch, containing original black & white photographs, 3 and 4 to a side, illustrating scenes related to providing smallpox vaccinations, caring for patients with smallpox, and other scenes around the Grape Creek smallpox camp and smallpox hospital. Many photos have detailed handwritten legends, with names of patients, nurses and doctors, in ink either on the photo or on the album page. The location of the camp is stated to be Grape Creek, but the state is not specified but this appears to be a rural hilly area, perhaps in the Midwest or Southwest. A covered wagon and horse-drawn carriage are pictured in 2 images.
Identified in one document that refers to a group photograph, dated July 8th, 1898 are two doctors - Dr. Kellenburger and Dr. Little. A Dr. E.K. Kellenberger was a County Board of Health Office of Woodson County in Yates Center, Kansas who was involved in a smallpox outbreak in Piqua, Kansas in 1889.
Additional research on these remarkable photographs would be beneficial.
