Anatomy by Henry Gray (commonly known as Gray's Anatomy) was first published 1858. The anatomy textbook proved to be a great success due to its illustrations and compact size. The illustrations were made by Gray's fellow anatomist, Henry Vandyke Carter, and engraved on wood by Butterworth and Heath.
