                    The amputation of a man's leg. One surgeon holds the man's leg above a bucket and another uses a saw to cut the leg. A man with an amputated hand stands behind the patient.

                    Feldtbůch der Wundtartzney, Hans von Gersdorff's fieldbook of surgery, was first published in 1517 in Strasbourg. The work proved to be a popular surgical text and is especially well-known for its instructions on limb amputation. The illustrations, hand-colored in this copy, are attributed to Johann Ulrich Wechtlin and include the first printed image of an amputation.
