A doctor cauterizes a wound on man's thigh with a cauter. Below the man's thigh is a fire where the cauter is heated. Above the two men hang several more cauters.

Feldtbůch der Wundtartzney, Hans von Gersdorff's fieldbook of surgery, was first published in 1517 in Strasbourg. The work proved to be a popular surgical text and is especially well-known for its instructions on limb amputation. The illustrations, hand-colored in this copy, are attributed to Johann Ulrich Wechtlin and include the first printed image of an amputation.
