The amphioxus is depicted in figures 7-12: mature egg (figure 7), egg in cleavage (figure 8), blastoderm (figure 9), gastrula (figure 10), young larva (figure 11), mature larva (figure 12), and cross-section of the developed amphioxus (figure 13).

Ernst Haeckel's Anthropogenie, oder, Entwickelungsgeschichte des menschen, a simplified embryology textbook focusing on ontogeny and phylogeny, was first published in 1874. Challenged on the accuracy of its embryological illustrations and it's promotion of the recently developed theories of Darwin, the book's publication was the subject of much controversy. Many of the work's embryological illustrations were borrowed from previous textbooks, along with a few originals by Haeckel himself.
