Description

Lithograph by J. G. Bach from a drawing by Ernst Haeckel.
Cross-sections of different animals and their embryos at different stages of development. Cross-section through the gastrula (figure 1), cross-section through the amphioxus-larva in the early stages (figure 2), cross-section through the germinal disk of a higher vertebrate animal with the system of the oldest organs (figure 3), cross-section through the germinal disk of a higher vertebrate animal somewhat more developed than in figure 3 (figure 4), cross-section through the pelvis (?) and the hindlegs of the embryo of a higher vertebrate animal (figure 5), cross-section of a developed ancient primordial fish (Urfisch) or another lower vertebrate (figure 6), cross-section of a superior worm through the head of an annelid (figure 7), and cross-section of the human thorax (figure 8).

Source

Ernst Haeckel's Anthropogenie, oder, Entwickelungsgeschichte des menschen, a simplified embryology textbook focusing on ontogeny and phylogeny, was first published in 1874. Challenged on the accuracy of its embryological illustrations and it's promotion of the recently developed theories of Darwin, the book's publication was the subject of much controversy. Many of the work's embryological illustrations were borrowed from previous textbooks, along with a few originals by Haeckel himself.
