Intended for students, physicians, and pharmacists, Carson set out for his work to supplant two important works of medical botany, American Medical Botany by Jacob Bigelow and Vegetable materia medica of the United States by William Barton. Carson's work includes 100 color plates, with lithography by J. H. Colen.
